You Were Right, Phoenix

I don't say, "I miss you" lightly.
It's not a, "Hey, we haven't talked in a while."
Or a, "How've you been?"

It's a "Part of my soul feels absent"
Kind of thing.

I know I made the mistake.
And you have always been nice about it.
But even though we may never be a couple again,
I can't have a casual acquaintance conversation with you.
It feels wrong
Like we're not us.

So I say, "I miss you."
And you say "Why hello there,"
Like I'm a younger cousin you haven't seen in years,

And I die a little more again
Because you've still got that part of my soul that's absent.
I gave that to you,
And I mean(t) it.

You called it phoenix love.
Love that would keep being reborn.
You were being poetic.
